Who are we?

Completely independent, the Great Cornish Food Store is a grocery store like no other.

On 16th June 2016, our trailblazing  store and cafe opened alongside  Waitrose’s brand new store in Truro.  We believe we are the first example anywhere in Britain (and possibly the world) of a major supermarket sharing its premises with a completely independent local food retailer.

It was all thanks to a forward-thinking planning condition for the development of Tregurra Park that our large space of 5000 sq feet was earmarked for the sale of entirely local food and drink and a limited amount of non-grocery items.

In our beautifully designed store, we believe we stock the widest range of top quality Cornish food and drink you will find anywhere, but that’s not all.  We are here to put the joy back into grocery shopping.  With a friendly welcome, truly personal service and products selected for you with both quality and value in mind, we bring you 21st century style and choice alongside traditional values of  honesty and integrity.

And we must be doing a few things right.  In February 2017, we were proud winners of the ‘Best Independent Food Retailer’ category in the Food Magazine reader awards and in May 2017 we won ‘Best New Business’ at the Cornwall Business Awards. In October 2018 we won Independent Retailer of the Year in the Cornwall Life Food and Drinks awards.

The Great Cornish Food Store is owned and managed by Ruth Huxley.  Ruth is also the Managing Director of  the store’s sister company Cornwall Food and Drink, a network organisation that helps to develop, evolve and promote the food and drink industry of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, as part of a wider remit to ensure a bright, successful and sustainable future for the industry.

A font of Cornish food knowledge, Ruth has also proved that she understands what shoppers are looking for as well as what works for the myriad small-scale Cornish food producers that collectively make such an important contribution to our local economy.

Ruth and her team have also written and published two books – The award-winning Great Cornish Food Book and the follow-up Great Cornish Fish Book.
